Prof. Ahmed Eltawil

Ahmed M. Eltawil is a Professor and Associate Dean for Research at the Computer, Electrical, and Mathematical Sciences and Engineering (CEMSE) Division at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). Prior to joining KAUST, he was a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) from 2005 to 2021. Professor Eltawil earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2003, following his M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees from Cairo University in 1999 and 1997, respectively. At KAUST, he founded the Communication and Computing Systems Laboratory (CCSL), where he leads research efforts on efficient architectures for computing and communication systems, with a particular focus on mobile wireless systems. His research spans multiple domains, including low-power mobile systems, machine learning platforms, sensor networks, body area networks, and critical infrastructure networks.
A Distinguished Lecturer for IEEE COMSOC (2023–2024), Professor Eltawil is an active contributing member of IEEE, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO), the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), among other professional organizations. His contributions to the field have been recognized through numerous accolades, including the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, the 2021 "Innovator of the Year" Award from the Henry Samueli School of Engineering at UCI, and two United States Congressional Certificates of Merit. Professor Eltawil played a pivotal role in multiple technology startups, including Silvus Technologies, Newport Media, and Lextrum, contributing to significant translational innovations. He also serves as an expert consultant to the mobile computing and communications industry and has held editorial positions for leading journals and served as a reviewer for national and international research funding agencies.
