Description

This course provides an overview of information systems. Topics of interest include information system definitions, information system functions, key business functions, types of information systems, role of information in solving business problems, role of information systems in business competitive advantage, Internet business models, and e-commerce. It also aims to provide students with a broad background in multimedia information systems, including the role and design of multimedia systems that incorporate digital audio, graphics, and video. In addition, the factors affecting the adoption of cross-organizational systems, the advantages and disadvantages of virtual offices and virtual organizations, and the advantages of information systems within organizations. Additionally, the introduction of business analytics tools and concepts to improve management, organization, and business.

Objectives

  • 1. Overview the five basic areas of information systems knowledge needed by business professionals, including the conceptual system components and major types of information systems
    2. Introduce fundamental concepts of competitive advantage through information technology.
    3. Review history, trends, and developments in microcomputer, midrange, and mainframe computer systems; basic computer system concepts; and the major types of technologies used in peripheral devices for computer input, output, and storage.
    4. Review the basic features and trends in the major types of application software and system software used to support enterprise and end-user computing.
    5. Introduce key database management concepts and applications in business information systems.
    6. Present an overview of the Internet and other telecommunication networks, business applications, and trends and reviews technical telecommunications alternatives.
    7. Understand the role of e-business, e-commerce and decision support systems.
