Objectives

  • Permits to Work (PTW) are a formal, documented way of controlling hazardous activities such as Hot Works; Confined Space Entry; Live Electrical Works; Work on Machinery; Work at Height etc. The permit to work is a key element of the safe system of work which employers can use to help control the works and therefore manage the risks and hazards associated with the specified activity. The permit specifies conditions and controls that need to be in place before the work is allowed to commence, it will also usually specify timescales; the details of responsible persons and conditions that must be maintained or met throughout the works.
