Objectives

  • This training course is developed to introduce the main concepts of dredging techniques. Different types of dredgers and their functions as well as dredging importance are presented. The training course provides essential background to assist the trainees to deal more efficiently with the depth data, establishing bathymetric maps as a base for estimating the volume of the dredged materials. The skills for calculating different cross-sectional areas and volumes of dredged material in the field will be practiced professionally.

Outcomes

Trainees successfully completing this training course will be able to:- Classify and compare different types of dredgers- Understand clearly the differences between the dredgers and their functions; - Classify the used equipment in hydrographic surveying measuring water depths.- Discuss hydrographic surveying data management and modeling.- Practice constructing contour maps and depth soundings.- Practice the different methods for calculating cross sectional areas of dredged materials (regular and irregular shapes; Trapezoidal and Simpson1/3 rule). - Practice the different methods for calculating volumes of dredged materials (Average End Area, Prismoidal method, TIN Model). - Compute volume of disposal material. - Discuss software packages used to compute volumes and maps. - Practice different field data exercises and assignments.
