Objectives

  • This course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and their applications. It covers both theoretical and practical aspects of GIS, including spatial data representation, GIS software, data sources, digitizing techniques, and geospatial analysis. Students will gain hands-on experience using QGIS, an open-source GIS platform, to work with spatial data, perform attribute selections, conduct georeferencing, and create meaningful maps. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with essential GIS skills for data management, spatial analysis, and visualization.

Outcomes

•\tUnderstand the basic principles of GIS, including spatial and non-spatial data concepts.•\tNavigate and utilize the QGIS interface efficiently.•\tImport, manage, and manipulate GIS datasets in various formats.•\tApply different selection methods to analyze spatial and attribute data.•\tCreate and edit vector layers through digitization techniques.•\tUnderstand the importance and usage of coordinate systems in GIS.•\tPerform georeferencing and integrate satellite imagery with vector data.•\tUtilize topology tools for spatial accuracy and data integrity.•\tExport GIS projects into various formats for presentation and decision-making.•\tDesign and execute independent GIS projects, demonstrating learned skills.
