Objectives

  • The course provides students with basic principles and practices of decontamination using different types of disinfectants and antiseptics in healthcare facilities including different hospital compartments and laboratories. The course provides knowledge about different disinfecting agents and their effect on different types of pathogens including multidrug resistant bacteria. It also addresses the mode of spread of pathogens in healthcare facilities. It provides guidance on the use of antimicrobial agents and stewardship programs. It provides students with skills of safe collection and transport of clinical specimens to laboratories, safe hospital and laboratory practices and safe disposal of biologically hazardous waste. It highlights the differences between different biosafety levels of clinical laboratories and the proper biosafety and biosecurity practices in laboratories.
