The Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) has implemented an innovative solution to address food waste on its campuses. Currently producing 550 kg of food waste per day, AASTMT has found an effective way to utilize this waste by converting it into composite fertilizers. This practice not only reduces environmental impact but also promotes sustainability. By recycling these fertilizers to grow the landscape on campus, AASTMT has created a closed-loop system that minimizes waste and contributes to the beautification and maintenance of the university's surroundings. This initiative serves as an excellent example of how institutions can actively participate in waste reduction and sustainable practices.​​​​​​​

The success of this initiative relies heavily on the active involvement of the university's workers, who collect food waste on a daily basis. Their dedicated efforts in collecting and segregating the waste play a vital role in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene, as well as enabling the efficient recycling process. The workers' commitment to this task demonstrates the university's strong environmental stewardship and serves as an inspiration to others within the AASTMT community.

To further improve its waste reduction efforts, AASTMT plans to raise awareness among students and staff about food waste and its environmental impact. Educational campaigns will be launched to encourage individuals to take steps to reduce their food waste. Additionally, AASTMT aims to provide more composting options on campus, including additional composting bins and collection points, to make it easier for students and staff to compost their food waste. The university also collaborates with suppliers to minimize food waste upstream, such as ordering precise amounts of food and donating surplus food to charities.

By implementing these measures, AASTMT aims to reduce its food waste even further and become a leading institution in sustainable food practices.

The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) produces 5 metric Tons per year of food waste, with a campus population of 41956 this means that each individual produces an average of 0.12 kg of food waste.​​​​​​​

This is a relatively low rate of food waste, especially considering the size of the AASTMT campus. However, there is always room for improvement. We seek more improvements by applying the following:

• Raise awareness of food waste and its environmental impact among students and staff. Many people are not aware of how much food they waste, or the impact that it has on the environment. AASTMT is planning to launch educational campaigns to raise awareness of this issue and encourage people to take steps to reduce their food waste.
• Provide and plan for more composting options on campus. Composting is a great way to reduce food waste and create organic fertilizer for the AASTMT green areas.
• AASTMT provides more composting bins and collection points around campus and makes it easier for students and staff to compost their food waste.
• Work with suppliers to reduce food waste upstream. AASTMT works with its suppliers to reduce the amount of food that is wasted before it even reaches campus. This could involve things like ordering more precise amounts of food and donating surplus food to charities.

• By taking these steps, AASTMT reduces its food waste even further and becomes a leader in sustainable food practices.
