Objectives

  • This course introduces the fundamentals of naval architecture alongside essential principles of marine safety. Students will study the types and structural components of merchant ships, including principal dimensions, framing systems, midship sections, rudders, and docking procedures. Emphasis is placed on ship stresses, underwater fittings inspection, and classification society survey requirements. The safety portion of the course covers onboard safety protocols, firefighting systems, fire detection and prevention, emergency drills, lifesaving appliances, and routine maintenance of safety equipment. By the end of the course, students will be able to interpret ship structures, assess safety requirements, and apply standard practices for maintaining both vessel integrity and crew safety.
