biography

Professor Amr Youssef Biography Prof. Youssef is currently serving as the Associate Dean for Educational Affairs, Graduate School of Business at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), Alexandria, Egypt. As nowadays the edge for any business school is to identify diversity, internationalization and multicultural environment as the main theme for the coming era building on this, he believes that his skills and experience present an excellent fit for this training as it incorporates this global perspective. His teaching journey that started in early 1995 –which is around twenty-five years now-has provided an excellent foundation for developing a collaborative teaching style. Instead of the "full frontal teaching" method of large lectures of autocratic seminars, He prefers student/trainees-centered teaching that encourages learning by both students (trainees) and teachers. He favors classroom dynamics that permit dialogue and foster a degree of student input as to curricula and grading criteria. Also, he likes students/trainees to think about the class as a community, therefore, he has students/trainees spend a fair amount of time in smaller groups in which they not only talk and think together, but learn from each other. In keeping with this emphasis on process, he has used the portfolio grading method indifferent courses, and have been pleased by enthusiastic student reactions both on undergraduate and graduate levels and trainees as well. He is committed to an interdisciplinary approach to teaching, and all of his courses are structured with this in mind. Rather than simply lecturing to a class, he strives to cultivate an interactive environment in which students can express themselves freely while learning to engage together in meaningful ways. He emphasizes critical thinking and the need to consider Accounting and Finance within its larger social, historical, and intellectual contexts. As well, he brings knowledge and experience in online education, through working as a part time lecturer for many online education universities such as Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU) located in Dubai, UAE by researching the best tools and methods to create e-learning courses for students. The application of technology and computer-based material in the classroom such as Webboard and YouTube are helpful tools in the promotion of meaningful learning through collaborative work as well. His course work has covered a wide range of courses in the various Accounting disciplines such as Principles of Financial Accounting, Intermediate Accounting I, II, and III, Advanced Financial Accounting, Financial Accounting for Decision Making, Cost Accounting, Advanced Cost Accounting, Managerial Accounting for Decision Making, Auditing and Financial Control amongst other courses. As a Professor at the AASTMT, a part time instructor at different universities and a visiting professor and a key speaker in multiple universities and conferences all over the world, he has gained valuable experiences leading undergraduate and graduate discussion sections for both accounting majors and non-accounting majors. In addition to classroom instruction, he usually advises students on appropriate research topics and edit and evaluate their work. He has been equally devoted to the research side throughout his academic life. His research interests have been fostered by several years of researching while he was working on is Ph.D in 2003 at the prestigious Durham University, UK (A World Class University). His research has focused upon how to use social sciences to improve some life aspects in the developing countries. Therefore, his research stems from his goal of developing and improving analytical models, frameworks and methods for design, evaluation, and upgrade of western concepts (i.e. Corporate Social Responsibility -CSR) to be adopted and applied by the developing countries such as Egypt. He has already published many papers in International Journals and made many presentations to worldwide conferences as shown in his curriculum vitae. For his research students whether on master doctoral levels, he chooses content and activities that are both significant and challenging for them so that they are stimulated to think “beyond” their comfort zone and feel involved in their own research learning process. Similarly, on seminars, he facilitates and encourages young researchers to make connections between their field of research and other disciplines. Collaborative learning is also central to his research philosophy in order to promote reflective thinking and improve their communicative and trans-cultural skills. In addition to his research experience, his strong presentation skills have been developed through many years of instruction and training in a variety of settings –different universities and companies all over the world. Through his experience, he has learned effective ways of engaging the audience in the content being shared. As well, having also presented to large audiences at conferences and in classes will be an additional asset to be considered by the recruiting committee. Before being appointed as the Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Business at ASTMT, he served as the chairman of Finance and Accounting department at the College of Management and Technology, AASTMT. Serving as the chairman of a department that has around 1300 undergraduate students and around 60 of different ranked-faculty members for almost seven years has supplemented him with different out-of-the-box skills. As he was responsible of the accomplishment of many tasks such as: To raise standards of student attainment and achievement within the whole curriculum area of the department and to monitor and support student progress. To develop and enhance the teaching practice of faculty members of department. To support and encourage faculty to obtain their graduate degrees in order to enhance their knowledge which will be reflected on students and the quality of service provided. To manage and deploy teaching faculty, financial and physical resources within the department effectively to support the department development plan. These tasks are among more different and diversified wide range tasks. Finally, the Arab Academy for Science and Technology (AASTMT)–as an Arab League Organization-realizes that diverse, talented and dedicated individuals are critical to its success therefore, we used to look for people from various backgrounds and give them opportunities to grow. Thus, he used to work in an inclusive work environment with a culture of excellence. He believes that enhancing diversity on the community in general and the university in specific is a collective effort and one that is multi-faceted and will need to be sustained to continue moving forward on this core value. As shown in his resume, he worked in different places such as Egypt, Qatar, UAE, Nigeria, Singapore, UK, US amongst other campuses and countries with different backgrounds and throughout his work life, he helped to embrace all the elements of a diverse university from race and ethnicity, to gender, age, sexual orientation and economic background. One of his beliefs is that fostering a diverse and inclusive environment provides benefits to the entire community. It challenges the whole preconceptions and encourages new ways of thinking. This enriches the academic environment and experience. And, it makes a good preparation to work with individuals who differ from each other in belief and practice. Therefore, he is committed to enhancing the institutional diversity and participating in preparing the University community for a rich and diverse future.
