As part of Egypt’s national efforts to improve the integrated solid waste management system, the Ministries of Environment and Local Development handed over the new sanitary landfill in Juhayna, Sohag Governorate, with a total cost of EGP 60 million. The project was implemented under the supervision of a joint committee including the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), the Arab Organization for Industrialization, the Military Technical College, and local authorities in Sohag.
Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmine Fouad emphasized that the landfill—spanning 10 feddans and serving the districts of Juhayna and El-Maragha—is designed to ensure safe waste disposal and prevent environmental pollution, supporting SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation). She stressed the importance of adhering to environmental standards to protect soil and groundwater from leachate contamination.
Minister of Local Development Dr. Manal Awad added that the total investment in Sohag’s waste management system has reached EGP 230.5 million, including multiple landfills, recycling facilities, and transfer stations, reflecting Egypt’s commitment to sustainable waste management and public health protection.
