As part of Egypt’s national efforts to enhance the infrastructure of the integrated solid waste management system, the Ministries of Environment and Local Development officially handed over a new sanitary landfill cell in Abu Griada, Faraskour District, Damietta Governorate.
The project was delivered through a joint committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Local Development, Ministry of Defense (represented by the Military Technical College and the Arab Organization for Industrialization), the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), and the Damietta Governorate. This committee oversees the implementation, monitoring, and handover of waste infrastructure projects under the inter-ministerial agreement signed to develop Egypt’s national waste management network.
Minister of Environment Dr. Yasmine Fouad announced that the new landfill cell covers 7 feddans at a total cost of EGP 45 million, complementing the previously delivered 10-feddan sanitary landfill in the same area. The site includes administrative buildings, generator rooms, daily fuel tanks, water reservoirs, and a leachate drainage system to ensure environmentally safe waste disposal.
Dr. Fouad emphasized that these efforts aim to eliminate open dumping and reduce emissions contributing to climate change, in line with SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), ensuring safe waste disposal, pollution control, and public health protection.
Minister of Local Development Dr. Manal Awad added that the integrated treatment, recycling, and safe disposal complex in Abu Griada spans 64 feddans with a total investment of EGP 95 million, in addition to a mobile waste station costing EGP 6 million. The total investment in Damietta’s waste management system now exceeds EGP 146 million, marking a significant step toward a sustainable and circular waste economy in Egypt.
