On October 30, 2023, the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) joined forces with the World Bank-supported Regional Network in Energy for Women in MENA (RENEW-MENA) to host an event titled “Enhancing Education and Gender Inclusion for Energy Transition and Climate Action in MENA” at AASTMT’s Alexandria campus. This event brought together leaders from academia, energy experts, and private sector representatives to strengthen the integration of women in the energy sector and foster skills for climate resilience.
The event opened with remarks from AASTMT and RENEW-MENA representatives, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in advancing gender inclusion and preparing future professionals for the energy transition. The sessions, targeted at STEM students, were designed to introduce the students to the energy sector and equip them with insights into clean energy careers and the evolving landscape of sustainable energy in Egypt and the MENA region.
The conference featured four key sessions, including an introduction to RENEW-MENA, a presentation on clean energy and job opportunities from the World Bank, discussions on the roles of regulators and private companies in supporting energy transition, and an overview of AASTMT’s initiatives in aligning curricula with the demands of energy transition and decarbonization. AASTMT’s involvement in the event reflects its dedication to advancing climate action through education and skill-building, fostering a new generation of professionals equipped to tackle sustainability challenges.
With active participation from students and faculty, the event underscored the academy’s commitment to promoting climate resilience, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing CO2-conscious education. The sessions highlighted AASTMT’s role in preparing students to adapt to regulatory advancements, including support for renewable energy and electric mobility, and provided HR tips for starting a career in the energy sector.
The conference concluded with students presenting projects related to climate change, underscoring their commitment to addressing global environmental challenges. Dr. Sherin Youssef, AASTMT’s Head of Computer Engineering and Chair of IEEE Egypt Women in Engineering and Technology, commended the students’ dedication, stating, “The students impressed with their views on climate change and innovative projects, embodying AASTMT’s vision for a sustainable future.”
This joint event demonstrated AASTMT’s leadership in empowering youth, advancing climate literacy, and fostering gender inclusion, supporting a green transition in line with SDG 13 goals.
