The initial items covered by the scope of Ain Shams University (P7) as per the initial proposal as part of the development work package are listed in the following table:

In order to cover the above-mentioned items, the vision of Ain Shams University was to integrate these items in the form of active learning student projects. These projects are mainly divided into two categories: First, the development of control packages for a smart building and secondly the development of a standalone wind turbine with building integration capabilities. Further illustration of such projects is listed in section 2. The equipment bought by Ain Shams University to support the aims of the project are tabulated below:

The following section contains a description of the proposed projects for implementation of the work package requirements, photos of the procured equipment and justification for purchase.

2)Development of control packages for a smart building:

This package was sub divided into two main projects:
   1) Building automated management and control.
   2) Automated control for a smart HVAC system.

2.1) Automated building management and control:
This project covers the three requirements Smart Environment Training Software Packages,
Simulation software for energy saving with educational and training license and warranty and
Automated Logic’s Web control for building automation system.

The students were trained on the programming and interfacing with BMS systems using licensed
Sauter Case Suite software shown in Fig. 1. Training and technical support were also provided as part of the software package shown on Fig. 2. The practical part was covered as well, the students constructed and programmed the needed control panels for an access control system, CCTV security system, Power control and building lighting management. Hence, ASU bought the following items to fulfil the requirements of this project.

The access control hardware serves as a practical application to the BMS system. Students assembled , tested and programmed the system after receiving proper training.

The BMS panel is considered as the brain of the smart system , where it controls and coordinates with the various system to achieve optimum energy saving.

2.2) Automated control for a smart HVAC system:

Furthermore, to add some diversification to the previous project of section 2.1 automated control for a smart HVAC system was added. In this project the students programmed the system control system for the sake of achieving energy efficient performance and were involved in the assembly of the control panels. some additional hardware was procured such as the control valves, pressure gauges, thermometers and air separator in order to complement the HVAC system, give performance indication and feedback so that the students can simulate an actual complete HVAC system. Students were able to assemble, test and program the HVAC control system.

The complementary hardware such as air separator and valves enabled testing actual performance of the system on an existing building, thus enriching the training even more and linking theory to application.

The control valve served as an actuator to implement the actions of the control system. While the air separator is a complementary system to the chilled water HVAC system.

3)Development of a standalone wind turbine with building integration capabilities:

This project was carried out as part of the fulfillment of Smart Environment Training Software Packages requirement. Students designed and manufactured a standalone scale wind turbine along with its control scheme. To manufacture a fully operational wind turbine a wind power generator was procured for the sake of practical application.

The team of students who were involved in this project participated in the international small wind turbine contest (ISWTC) organized by NHL stenden and achieved the best performance award. Finally, a work center printer was needed to support the students in the needed documentation work
