Renewable, Innovative & Integrated Water Treatment Unit

Introduction

  • Enhancement of groundwater quality to comply with the required limits permits using such water for irrigating edible crops, which directly affects the economy and reduces the pressure of surface water consumption.

  • Application of Silver nanoparticles (Ag) with Activated Carbon (AC) is highly efficient as a biocidal agent, with no negative impact on either humans, animals or the environment

  • The treatment system provides biotechnology added value and revenue for the application of groundwater for irrigation and/or drinking purposes that comply with Egypt's 2030 Vision Strategy towards the protection of water resources towards sustainability

  • The present project aimed to investigate and enhance the suitability of water from 13 borehole ground wells at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) (Abu Qir Campus) near the eastern coast of Alexandria City (Abu Qir Area) for irrigation and/or drinking purposes

  • Water samples were collected from the 13 boreholes over the four seasons 2022 and subjected to physical, chemical and biological characterization to define pollution status spatially and temporally, with emphasis on climatic factors

  • Treatment of ground water was implemented using innovative nanotechnology to enhance water quality for the irrigation and/or drinking purposes.

  • Moreover, solar panels will be installed to generate electric energy for pumping groundwater

The main objectives of the present project are to:

Evaluate the groundwater quality (physical, chemical and microbiological quality parameters) and its suitability for irrigation purposes in the selected borehole wells at Abu Qir Area, Alexandria .

Enhancement of groundwater quality to comply with the required limits permits using such water for irrigating edible crops which directly affecting economy and reduce the pressure of surface water consumption

Application of Silver nanoparticles (Ag) with Activated Carbon (AC) is highly efficient as a biocidal agent, with no negative impact on either the humans, animals or the environment.

The treatment system provides biotechnology added value and revenue for application of groundwater for irrigation and/or drinking purposes that comply with the 2030 Egypt's Vision Strategy towards protection of water resources towards sustainability.

Main components of the system :

  • The Photovoltaic modules (PV modules) that provide sufficient power to operate the three-phase pump.
  • The Solar Inverter that will control the PV to operate at maximum power and convert the DC voltage from the photovoltaic modules into a three-phase AC voltage suitable for the pump.
  • The 3-phase pump to withdraw groundwater.
  • The filtration column is designed for water treatment and is made of PVC, which was chosen because it does not react with chlorine or the water itself.
  • A storage unit for water storage used in irrigation purposes
