GEMS-TECH Green Maritime Horizons: Advancing Sustainable Maritime Education for Clean Water and Ocean Health

The Innovation and Training Sector, in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering, has been awarded the “Green Maritime Horizons” (GEMS-TECH) project, funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme. This initiative aims to modernize maritime education in Egypt and Kenya by integrating sustainable maritime practices, green technologies, and water resource protection into higher education.

The maritime sector plays a critical role in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through its efforts to reduce marine pollution, enhance wastewater management, and promote sustainable use of ocean and freshwater ecosystems. However, there remains a significant gap in equipping students and professionals with the knowledge and skills required to address these environmental challenges.

The GEMS-TECH project bridges this gap by developing multidisciplinary academic modules, modernizing maritime curricula, and introducing Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) focused on sustainable water and marine solutions. The project aligns with the UN SDGs, the EU Green Deal, and the IMO 2050 Decarbonization Strategy to ensure cleaner seas and responsible water management.

Key Objectives:

  1. Integrate Clean Water and Sustainability – Embed principles of sustainable water and marine ecosystem management in maritime education.

  2. Bridge Industry and Academia – Strengthen partnerships to implement environmentally responsible maritime operations.

  3. Modernize Curricula – Update courses to focus on water conservation, pollution control, and green shipping technologies.

  4. Build Capacity – Train students, faculty, and professionals in green maritime practices and water-efficient systems.

  5. Develop Green Infrastructure – Establish labs equipped for hands-on learning in sustainable water and marine engineering.

  6. Promote Innovation – Encourage research on technologies that protect marine biodiversity and improve water quality.

Expected Impact:

  • Enhanced Maritime Education – Updated programs that integrate SDG 6 principles.

  • Cleaner Water Systems – Strengthened collaboration to reduce maritime pollution.

  • Practical Training – Two advanced sustainability labs in Egypt and Kenya.

  • Accessible Learning – Eight MOOCs promoting water-focused green maritime knowledge globally.

  • Sustainability Integration – Long-term inclusion of clean water and ocean protection concepts in national education strategies.
