Economic and Social Council of the Arab League States “Session 118”

H.E. Prof. Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghaffar Ismail Farag - President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) at the head of a high-level delegation from AASTMT, participated in the ministerial meeting that was held on Thursday 3- 9- 2026. the meeting was a part of the 118th Ordinary Session of the Economic and Social Council of the League of Arab States that was chaired by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and held from August 30 to September 3, 2026, at the League's headquarters in Cairo.

AASTMT participation highlights its crucial role in fostering economic and developmental integration among member states as well as in bolstering coordinated Arab action and cooperation among specialized organizations.

Along with the heads and officials of specialized Arab organization, the session was attended by the concerned ministers in the economic, financial, and commercial affairs of the Arab member states. Supporting the Palestinian economy, Arab cooperation in recovery and reconstruction, food security, sustainable agricultural development, and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals were among the important subjects discussed during the sessions. In order to promote economic cooperation and trade integration among Arab governments, the Council also monitored developments in the Arab Customs Union and the Greater Arab Free Trade Area.

It is worth noting that this session is significant since it is the first time the Economic and Social Council has convened since His Excellency Dr. Nabil Fahmy appointed as the League of Arab States' Secretary-General. This shows the common commitment to encouraging coordinated Arab activities and strengthening the partnership between the General Secretariat and specialized Arab organizations in order to promote the objectives of the Arab peoples.
