AASTMT Participation in the First International Day of Underwater Cultural Heritage
The Heritage Consultation Center (HCC) of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) participated in the celebrations hosted by the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on the occasion of the First International Day of Underwater Cultural Heritage that was combined with the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage (2001).
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina hosted this event on 20- 8- 2026, and organized it in cooperation with the UNESCO Chair for Underwater Cultural Heritage at Alexandria University and the Center for Maritime Archaeology at Alexandria University. A selected group of national and international organizations and organizations involved in the protection of underwater cultural heritage participated in the event, including representatives from UNESCO, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the Alexandria Governorate.
During the celebrations, it was underlined that the event is a significant milestone in the journey to preserve this type of heritage. The celebration underscores the importance of continuing joint work between academic, cultural, and research institutions, and strengthening national and international partnerships. This contributes to the protection of underwater cultural heritage and the development of mechanisms for its study, documentation, and accessibility, as it is an integral part of human memory and global cultural heritage. The wide range of submerged archeological sites in Alexandria's waters, which extend from Abu Qir Bay and the Eastern Harbor to the Qaitbay Citadel area, underscored the city's historical significance and age-old civilization and made it a unique model in this field.
It is worth noting that AASTMT participation in the event highlights its role in promoting sustainability, scientific research, and heritage issues as well as in fostering collaboration between academic and research institutions and international organizations tasked with safeguarding cultural heritage, especially that pertaining to the marine environment and coastal regions.
