The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) hosted a monitoring visit from the European Union during the past week, as part of the follow-up and evaluation of EU-funded projects implemented in partnership with several Egyptian and international higher education institutions.
The visit started on Sunday with online monitoring meetings, followed by an on-site visit to AASTMT’s Abu Qir campus on Wednesday, during which a comprehensive programme of meetings and activities was carried out.
Monitoring of National Partnership Projects
As part of the visit, a monitoring session was conducted for the MED-UP project, implemented in partnership with AASTMT, Delta University for Science and Technology, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology. The meeting was held from the premises of the Ministry, with Egyptian partners participating online.
Awareness and Capacity-Building Activities for Egyptian Universities
Within the framework of the visit, several awareness-raising and capacity-building activities were organised to support Egyptian universities and enhance their participation in EU programmes. On Monday, a public information lecture was delivered for Egyptian researchers and higher education staff, organised in cooperation with the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) and in coordination with the Egyptian National Erasmus+ Office (NEO).
The lecture was hosted by the German University in Cairo (GUC) and focused on the new Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) call, addressing general requirements, application procedures, and key evaluation criteria applied by the funding authority.
Monitoring Visits to Partner Institutions
On Tuesday, the visit included monitoring activities for the RADIO project at the German University in Cairo, a partner of AASTMT, as well as a monitoring visit to Ain Shams University in its role as a partner of AASTMT in the GEMS-TECH project.
AASTMT Hosts Multiple EU Events – Wednesday
Wednesday witnessed the organisation of three major parallel events at AASTMT:
Monitoring visits to several EU-funded projects coordinated or implemented by AASTMT, including:
AQUA VET

Hosting a Cluster Meeting for the 13 Egyptian projects selected for funding under the 2025 CBHE call, organised by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA) in cooperation with the Egyptian National Erasmus+ Office (NEO). AASTMT hosted this important event, noting that the Academy participates in 7 of the 13 newly funded projects.
Representatives of Egyptian universities involved in the selected projects attended the meeting, which aimed at fostering coordination, networking, and exchange of experiences among national partners.
During the Cluster Meeting, project testimonies and best practices were presented by AASTMT project teams, notably from the SPEED and UP-TAKERS projects, highlighting successful implementation experiences and lessons learned.
In parallel, a joint information session was organised by the Egyptian National Erasmus+ Office and the Egyptian Horizon Europe Office to present the different Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe calls. The session attracted around 200 participants, both on-site and online.
Strengthening AASTMT’s Regional Role
The monitoring visit and accompanying events highlight AASTMT’s key role in hosting, coordinating, and implementing EU-funded projects, strengthening cooperation between Egyptian and European higher education institutions, and contributing to the advancement of higher education and research at the national and regional levels.
