Visit of Head of the Construction and Building Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering and some students to local farmers in Sharkeya Governorate to raise awareness of the sustainable development goals and to discuss the agricultural and heal

In light of fulfilling the social responsibility of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, through integration and interaction with the community to achieve a positive and effective impact, Prof. Dr. Mohamed El Sayed Meshaly-Head of the Construction and Building Engineering Department at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the Academy’s branch in Port Said and a number of students visited the local community that we partner with located at Izbat Rushdy village, Fakous, Ash Sharqia Governorate.
Their mission was to connect with the local farmers, understand the hardship they are facing and the health issues that are straining them from having a healthy life. Their insight was to understand what are the constraints the local farmers may face while working in agriculture. The problems that the local farmers face were their goals to solve. They asked them to elaborate more on the issues they had.
On campus, we grow the Moringa which is a fast-growing, drought-resistant tree. Such plant has a really high demand from pharmaceutical companies because of its amazing usage and benefits. We wanted to help our local community. We couldn’t find a better way to support them so we supplied them with a sufficient amount of the moringa on a frequent basis. We explained to them how to plant, harvest, and take care of the plant itself. We also gave them our past experience with planting the moringa. We also offered them organic plant pots that the team of Enactus AAST Port said produced on campus. This plant pot is organic and only uses agricultural waste so it can also be used as a fertilizer for the soil. Moreover, we offered them the suitable facilities that they will need so they can get all the resources from campus.
At the end of the visit, we were interested in buying rice and eggs from them with a promise to buy their other organic vegetables in a frequent basis. We also made a deal to market their products in our community
