City by the water

In fulfillment of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology’s commitment to community service, environmental development, and showcasing the capabilities of its students through activities that enhance their excellence and improve their future employment prospects, the Department of Architectural Engineering and Environmental Design—across its main campuses in Alexandria and Port Said—collaborated last week with the University of Kassel (Germany) and Alexandria University on a joint academic project titled “Urban Regeneration: City by the Water.”

This collaborative initiative brought together architecture students from the three institutions—Germany, Alexandria, and Port Said—to jointly address urban challenges related to reconnecting cities with their waterfronts. The project included field visits to Port Said, New Mansoura, and Alexandria, enabling students to engage directly with the urban contexts under study.

Throughout the week, participants attended a series of informative lectures delivered by experts in urban design, heritage, and planning, covering the historical background and urban evolution of these coastal cities.

The students gained a hands-on, immersive experience in analyzing real urban issues and developing creative, context-sensitive design solutions. At the conclusion of the workshop, they presented their proposed urban regeneration designs for these waterfront areas, reflecting a multidisciplinary and cross-cultural approach to sustainable urban development.
