On November 23, 2025, the Department of Architectural Engineering and Environmental Design at AASTMT (Heliopolis Campus), hosted a distinguished lecture entitled “Architectural Design Concepts in the Cybernetic Age” by Dr. Joseph El Hourany, the President of the Arab Architects Association since 2023.
Dr.El Hourany, is an architect, urban planner, and interdisciplinary researcher with an extensive academic and professional background. His work spans architecture, philosophy, urban sciences, and music, with research at MIT that focused on the aesthetics of mathematical equations. His publications, and international exhibitionsreflect his significant influence on contemporary architectural discourse.
The lecture discussed the evolving role of parametric design in contemporary architectural practice. Dr.El Hourany highlighted how advances in digital technologies have transformed computational design, allowing architects to generate complex forms through the manipulation of interconnected parameters. Through a series of analytical case studies, Dr.El Houranydemonstrated how modern computational and cybernetic tools can be used to structure design decisions, achieve mass customization, and clarify the strategic links between parameters and performance.
This event comes as part of the Department’s ongoing commitment to enriching academic dialogue and exposing students to pioneering perspectives in architectural design and technology.
