A Forensic Study of Positioning in Handwritten Documents: A Cognitive Approach

Funded Project
Start Date : 01 Sep 2022-01 Jun 2023
The research paper aims at employing Hart’s (2014) positioning discursive strategy to analyse linguistic choices made by someone who suffers from mental health issues and how they construct reality. Positioning corresponds to the construal operations deixis and point of view which are the tools of analysis used in the current study. According to Hart (2014), deixis refers to the conceptual spacing of the speaker/writer among other actors and physical context. Deixis is used to reflect the proximity of concepts concerning the writer. The three main axes which are socio-spatial, temporal, and modal axes are used to analyse the selected data. Point of view is the positive or negative representation of oneself or others through lexical items.

Translating Meaning in Picture Books Towards a Multimodal Based Approach

Graduation Project
Start Date : 01 Sep 2019-01 Jun 2020
This paper attempts to examine how a multimodal-based approach can be used to aid in the translation process via utilizing the tools of visual and verbal analysis to direct the translator's lexical choices throughout the translation process. In order to achieve this aim, the current paper analyzed a selected set of five pictures from the children’s picture book فكرة لتغيير العالم in order to extract the meaning conveyed. This was achieved by employing the tools proposed by Painter et al. (2012) and examining the extent to which these tools affected the translation. The paper examines Painter’s tools of visual analysis under the three meta-functions, which consist of the interpersonal meta-function, the ideational meta-function and the textual meta-function. The paper uses a selection of tools from each meta-function in order to extract the meaning conveyed in the pictures. The study concludes that the interplay of meaning conveyed in the pictures and verbal content affected the translators’ decisions during the translation and this effect was evident the translation.

Multimodal Approach to the Subtitling of Syrian Refugee Crisis - The Hardest Part of their Journey to Europe

Graduation Project
Start Date : 01 Sep 2018-01 Jun 2019
This research paper reports on the translation and analysis of a documentary entitled Syrian Refugee Crisis - The Hardest Part of their Journey to Europe. The aim of the paper was to apply Henrik Gottlieb’s translation strategies in subtitling (1992) and to analyze three scenes from the selected documentary following Machin and Mayr multimodal critical discourse analysis model (2012) which adopted Kress and Van Leeuwen’s visual model. We applied Gottlieb’s subtitling strategies and we calculated the frequencies by which each strategy was used. Then we applied Machin and Mayr’s MCDA model on three scenes selected from the documentary. We found that the most frequently used translation strategies were transfer (72.8%) followed by paraphrase (19.2%), condensation (4.8%), and deletion (2.7%). The study also showed how multiple modes such as, written texts, visuals and sounds allow the audience to understand the meaning of any content more clearly. Results of the current study were compared to results of other studies and recommendations were made.
