This study focuses on optimizing the design of an axial turbine for application in an Oscillating Water Column (OWC) system, aiming to enhance performance and energy efficiency through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). As global energy demands rise, the efficient harnessing of ocean wave energy remains a critical challenge, particularly in advancing Wave Energy Converter (WEC) technology and refining air turbine design within OWC systems. The research centers on a unidirectional axial turbine, a key component in converting pneumatic power into mechanical energy. A three-step optimization approach was employed using a 3D-CFD model. This involved generating parametric geometries of rotor blades and guide vanes by modifying key geometric parameters, implementing a Design Exploration process using the Central Composite Design (CCD) method to define the design space, and applying response surface optimization algorithms to evaluate parameter effects on turbine performance. The Genetic Aggregation algorithm was particularly instrumental in developing response surfaces for optimization. Critical design parameters, including guide vane radius (Rg), rotor tip radius (Rt), pressure side radius on the rotor (Rr), trailing edge relative angle of the rotor (β2), and guide vane angle (α1), were analyzed and optimized. Among these, the guide vane angle (α1) emerged as the most influential factor in efficiency enhancement. The optimized turbine design demonstrated a 28% improvement in efficiency at low flow coefficients and significant reductions in energy losses compared to the initial design.
