"Heritech" is a graduation project carried out by final-year students in the Language and Translation Department at the College of Language and Communication, Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport. The project aims to explore the use of artificial intelligence in audiovisual translation, with a focus on AI-generated dubbing and its ability to replicate the quality of human dubbing. The students analyze an AI-dubbed episode of the documentary series "Om El Donia" using scholar Giselle Miggiani’s "Script, Sound, and Speech Model," proposed in 2024 which evaluates dubbing quality in terms of synchronization, naturalness of speech, and preservation of meaning in the translated dialogue. The project also draws on Posthumanist Theory, which examines the interaction between humans and technology in the production of knowledge and creativity, particularly in fields such as voice acting and dubbing. The students are also working on producing short videos on social media to dismantle common misconceptions about ancient Egyptian civilization among Western audiences. Graduation Project

The research paper aims at employing Hart’s (2014) positioning discursive strategy to analyse linguistic choices made by someone who suffers from mental health issues and how they construct reality. Positioning corresponds to the construal operations deixis and point of view which are the tools of analysis used in the current study. According to Hart (2014), deixis refers to the conceptual spacing of the speaker/writer among other actors and physical context. Deixis is used to reflect the proximity of concepts concerning the writer. The three main axes which are socio-spatial, temporal, and modal axes are used to analyse the selected data. Point of view is the positive or negative representation of oneself or others through lexical items. Point of view is used to examine how the lexical choices demonstrate the way a person with mental health issues regards themselves and others. The data consists of the suicide note of Kurt Cobain, the lead singer of Nirvana who suffered from depression, ADHD and bipolar disorder. The findings indicate that deictic expressions play an important role in increasing or decreasing the conceptual distance between the speaker/writer and the concepts from their physical and emotional contexts. The findings also reveal that the lexical choices used by someone who suffers a mental health issue create both negative and positive mental representations.

Graduation Project

The students selected goals 12 and 14, which focus on responsible consumption and production and the wellbeing of marine-life as themes of their graduation project. Accordingly, the project aims at raising children’s awareness on the issue of plastic. It targets children aged 4-10 through dubbing a twenty-three-minute cartoon episode, entitled “Bottled Up”, from the Canadian animation series “Cyberchase” into Egyptian Colloquial Arabic. The students wrote a research paper using the strategies of Machin and Mayr (2012) to implement linguistic and visual analysis. Additionally, the impact of characterization on the translation is also discussed. Furthermore, the group filmed a short documentary in which children are shown the dubbed episode and interviewed for feedback. The documentary also documents the students’ journey throughout the project and features a song on the environment translated and performed by the students themselves.

This paper aims at applying Cintas and Remael’s (2007) subtitling strategies in order to render the multimodal metaphors in the animated film The Breadwinner (2017), with a special perspective to the themes of feminism and women empowerment as found inside the film. The study uses the subtitling strategies to render the multimodal metaphors as proposed by Forceville (2009) on both the visual and linguistic modes of the animated film. The paper investigates the extent to which the creative metaphors manifested in the visual mode of the film align with the creative metaphors manifested in the linguistic mode. In addition, it also attempts to measure the extent to which Cintas and Remael’s (2007) subtitling strategies render the multimodal creative metaphors in the film. The results indicate that the multimodal creative metaphors implied shades of implicit meanings related to feminism and women empowerment which are the themes being researched in the study. Additionally, it was also found that the implicit meanings existed on both the linguistic and visual sides of the film.
