biography

Yomna Aly is an assistant lecturer at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AAST) in Egypt, specializing in translation studies. She earned her PhD in Translation Studies from Alexandria University, where her research focused on the sociocultural influences on the retranslation of historical Arab narratives. She also holds an MA in Translation Studies from Alexandria University and a BA in translation from the Faculty of Al-Alsun, Ain Shams University. With extensive experience teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP), academic writing, and translation courses, she integrates discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and computer-assisted translation tools into her instruction. Beyond academia, she has experience in translation and editing across various disciplines.

Investigating ChatGPT Translation of Culture-bound References in Egyptian TV Series Balto- An Exploratory Study

The study evaluates ChatGPTs accuracy in translating culture-bound references from colloquial Arabic to English using episodes from the Egyptian TV series Balto. It compares ChatGPTs translations with human translations based on Newmarks classifications and Pedersens strategies while following Netflix guidelines. Findings reveal that ChatGPT struggles with identifying Egyptian culture-bound references, often relying on paraphrase, cultural substitution, and omission.

Translating Children Literature Picture Books - A Multimodal Approach.

Students at the College of Language and Communication analyzed and translated the children book Fikra Litaghyeer Al Alam to raise awareness of education challenges for displaced children. Using Painter et al 2012 multimodal framework they examined how visuals influenced the translation of verbal content. Their research explored the multimodal nature of children books and the techniques used to ensure accurate meaning in translation.

Syrian refugee crisis- the hardest part of their journey to Europe
