Professor

Ahmed Osman Mohamed

Dean of Maritime Research & Consultation Center, Construction and Building Engineering

biography

Overview: Dr. Idris is a Professor in the Construction and Building Engineering Department, Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), Egypt - an Affiliate Professor in the School of Engineering, University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada - and a Professional Engineer licensed with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia, Canada. He is a behaviour modeller and a public transit expert with extensive academic and consultancy experience in North America and the Middle East. His main research interest is studying the intertwined relationship between the transportation and land use systems and their effect on travel behaviour and expected impacts (i.e. social, economic, and environmental). In his research, Dr. Idris employs qualitative and quantitative research methods including: data collection and stated choice experiments, statistical analysis and discrete choice modelling, computer simulation, and geographic information systems. Dr. Idris’s recent work has been focused on three main areas: 1) design transit networks that maximize demand attraction and mode shift to public transit 2) develop indicators to evaluate the performance of transit systems in relation to the provided level-of-service and the surrounding land use and 3) utilize crowdsourcing techniques, Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS) data (e.g. real-time passenger information, Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), and tweets), and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to analyze passengers’ behaviour and visualize service performance. Dr. Idris’s work has resulted in more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, 1 book chapter, and 11 technical reports. In addition, he is recipient of several research grants and research/teaching awards including the NSERC Discovery Grant ($120k, 2016 - 2020), the 2019 School of Engineering Scientific Publications Excellence Award, and the “2017 Thank a Prof. Recognition” based on nominations from students for supporting them in their educational endeavours and being a positive influence on students teaching and learning at UBC. Education: Dr. Idris holds a Ph.D. in Transportation Engineering and Planning from the University of Toronto and a Diploma in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from the American University in Cairo. He also has a Professional Certification in Teaching in Higher Education from the Woodsworth College, University of Toronto. Prior to joining the AASTMT in 2018, he spent five years (2013 - 2018) as an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering, UBC, Canada, preceded by two years (2011 - 2013) as a Research Associate/Project Manager in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Calgary, Canada. Hobbies: Dr. Idris is an avid fisherman who believes that a bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work!
